As a traditional type of heat exchange equipment, a shell-and-tube heat exchanger has been applied for ages. It has been extensively applied in many industrial departments, especially in such industries as chemical engineering, petroleum, and energy source. Shell-and-tube heat exchanger is composed of many tubes which constitute a tube bundle that serves as the heat transfer surface of the heat exchanger. It is hereby also known as a tubular heat exchanger.

At present, the traditional heat transfer enhancement methods can be broadly divided into three categories: tube side heat transfer enhancement, shell side heat transfer enhancement, and overall heat transfer enhancement.  There are two main ways to strengthen the heat exchange of tube side. One is to change the shape of the tube or improve the heat exchange area, such as spiral groove tube, cyclone tube, bellows tube, scaling tube, threaded tube, etc.  The other is to enhance the degree of turbulence in the tube, 
for example, the tube is equipped with various shapes of inserts.  Among them, change the design way of the heat exchange tube, such as changing the shape of the heat exchange tube, or increase the turbulence degree and heat transfer area of the fluid in the tube side, the specific design object includes bellows, telescopic tubes, finned tubes, etc.  The other type includes the tube insert design, and through the tube wound wire wreath, bond, etc., to achieve the turbulence degree of the tube;  Comparatively speaking, the tube insertion form is simple in execution, good effect, less investment, is the main application of the tube side heat transfer enhancement form.
